Famous People from Blackburn

Ever wondered who actually came from the town of Blackburn in Lancashire? Well, here we have a few different well-known names of people who you might know from off the telly or others who are “household names” in their own right.

Ian McShane

He is an actor who’s been in Deadwood, Kung Fu Panda and Pirates of the Caribbean, but lots of people in the UK know him as the main actor in the series Lovejoy.

He’s has lots of smaller parts too, including narrating some characters too such as in Shrek the Third and other animated movies. And, lately he joined the cast of Games of Thrones.

He now lives in California though, so he’s no longer a local Lancastrian.

Will Greenwood

Is a rugby union player who played for the Leicester Tigers and Harlequins, and played for the world cup squad for England in the 2003 World Cup.

He was educated at St Mary’s Hall (part of Stonyhurst), so he had quite the local upbringing as a child in his local Blackburn area.

Steve Pemberton

He’s an English actor, writer and comedian, and is best known for his role in The League of Gentleman programme. He’s acted in other TV series like Doctor Who and Benidorm and always seems to have that local strong accent.

He carried on studying in the North of England (across Lancashire and Yorkshire), and now lives in London.

Diana Vickers

A singer and songwriter who came to the spotlight after being a finalist in the TV show X-factor in 2008. She has a broad accent (true of anyone who’s from the local Blackburn area) and always seems to get on well when she’s being interviewed on the sofa.

She attended Westholme school (also in Blackburn) and has been taking singing lessons since the age of 11.

Carl Fogarty

Carl (Foggy) Fogarty is known as the most successful World Superbike racer of all time: winning the most championships ever.

He grew up in Blackburn and was into bikes from an early age, although he didn’t compete for the first time until he was 14 years old (some would say that is a little late with many famous racing drivers around the age of 9 or 10 setting out on their competitive debuts).

From local motorcross racing he soon wanted to compete internationally in the Formula 1 TT championships and soon won the coveted title.

He’s raced with big names such as Ducati and Honda, and after he retired was crowned King of the Jungle on the 2014 series of I’m a Celebrity Get me Out of Here on ITV.

Most of them probably also enlisted a Blackburn based personal training company to help them get fit and in shape. Click here if you want some help too.

There you have it. Famous people who came from a small town in the north west part of England, which has the Pennines on its east and the shores of the seaside on its west.
